Homework for Jan. 11th, 2010

1. “Life in Vietnam would be perfect if everyone were totally equal.” I totally disagree with this statement. If everyone were identical in

knowledge and culture, there would be no need for newspapers, books, or films. There would be no such sports as wrestling, running, and swimming, for everyone would be of the same talent. If everyone were the same in all points, it would be a disaster, and there would not be societies. If all people were the same in all aspects, such as in height, color, shape, inte

lligence, wealth, health, strength, beauty, and morals, it would be impossible to differentiate people from one another. Parents can’t recognize their children, police can’t discriminate what car that breaks the rule, and a man could not discriminate his daughter from his wife. Vietnamese people’s life and the society would become a mess of crisis between people and people.

2. In my society, the law would be:

Everybody have to be identical in knowledge and culture, no talented more than anyone else, no one is more gorgeous than others, if yes, you will have to wear mask designed by the government. Intelligence or genius is absolutely illegal, and whoever is will be able o replace their brain by

man made brain, which works as normal as regular people. Indeed, there would be no such sports as wrestling, running, and swimming, for everyone would be of the same talent.

3. Well, for me, to help people who are having less capable mentally, physically, or socially to “catch up”, there are plenty ways to do it. We could design product that could help those people, depends on what their sickness or situations are. For example that individual is having physical problem, that he has only one ear, and he afraid of being laughed or stared by others. The thing government could help him is to make a silicone ear but so lifelike that it even glows a bit in the sun like real skin. Of course he won’t able to hear by that ear, but at least he doesn't feel separate from his community.

4. The only problem that I can foresee right now that might come in a society with laws that force “equality for all” is people being tortured in a same box, with same amount of needs and a machine to control brains. The majority of people, about 98% of citizens, either old or young will receive this torment until they get to their ambitions, of having an “equality society”. In my opinion, equal means fair, and it is good. But having an equality society is personally make your life boring to live, also in general is a disaster, which decrease the develop of countries and nations. There’s no way to solve it, unless

human or whoever came up with the idea

equality changed that word to equity. Equity also mean equal, but it doesn’t mean you have to be identical. For example, you and your friend is studying math, but your friend doesn’t understand, so she asks the teacher. The teacher tutoring your friend again. By that direction, you don’t get extra teaching from teacher while your friend does, but at first she didn’t understand the lesson. Is that unfair? I don’t t

hink so! The goal is to make you understand the lesson, no matter how much time does the teacher spends to teach you or either your friend. Beside, you don’t want to learn more about one thing that you already know all, unless you have to. That’s how my solution is, to have an equity society, not equality society.

5. I am in the middle. I think total equality or either human domi

nate would both be possible. Equality for total is impossible, but for some is still possible and gonna happen, also with human nature makes sure that some people would eventually dominate others. Like I said above, at question one, if equality happens, it would be a disaster that ever happen. But that is just my opinion. In others minds, maybe people would say vice versa things from mines. And about the humans that dominate others, in command economy, communism, and dictatorship government, it is happening, like North Korea, China, Cuba, etc... However, in these years now, the majority of countries on earth mostly don’t have this happened, because they are all leading to become develop country, as I can considered as market economy, mixed economy, along with representative democracy. We all know that in these economies and government, people have rights to do what they want (legal things only), and they have freedom to make up or either delete some laws by their selected representative. In wrapping up, I believe the two are both possible to happen, but actually odd to happen.

6. - When I read the story, at the very end part when Harrison broke all handicap things on his body, showed himself as a very tall guy with handsome face. And with the ballerina, they danced freely, showed everybody their talents. In defiance of the gun of the Handicap General, they kept continued their ballet, and finally gave each other a deep long kiss until the two shots of bullet went through them. Th

at’s reminded me of the contestant Ann Ward in America’s Next Top Model Cycle 15. She was a very tall girl, about 1.90 meters, so that’s why no model company accepted her. But when she joined the America’s Next Top Model Cycle 15, her photo shoots five rounds on row stood at the first place. She looked really wild beautiful on her pictures, like that’s not the Ann Ward people used to know. She shows everybody her talent with an exactly the same choice as Harrison Bergeron, to be on the TV’s screen. And their talents amazed people in any which way.

- Harrison’s Dad was an intelligent man, and this was why he had to wear the ear phone to distract his thought every twenty second. Every twenty seconds, the ear phone made the burglar alarm, and it changed the sound every time, so that you always got surprised and forget thing you was thinking or even watching. I used to have this situation. Just from yesterday, while we were reading the story, Mr. Blake suddenly scared us by a yell, made we forgot where were we in the story. It is kinda fun, but if you have it bother you every day, it wouldn’t be that fun, instead, it would really annoying, make you feel doozy, headache, even can make you deaf, because the sound sounds like someone yells at you through your ears.

Mangareva, Pitcairn, and Henderson Islands

In our group, we decided to bring out 2 main problems of these three islands:
- Civil war
- Unsustainable development
The reason of having civil war is because they didn’t have any leader=> fought over to take the lead.
The second problems, people at three islands are not so wisely on using the land and the environment sustainability. They over used the land=> desertification, deforest station, erosion, for most of the farm lands of the three islands, brought hug damages, either went along with facing extinction.
Solutions:
If the people on these three islands could have done this before, I think their civilization could continue longer:
- People fought over because of being the leader. If the first person who ever take the leader seat, he or she should able to think of their descendent in the future, that they have to be the royal one who career the leader of the three island. Being good leaders always the best solution for the citizens to serve you, as you bring yourself to serve the three islands.
- What is the seafood for? Through the entire article, we did not read anything that relates to the ocean, except for trading stuff. What if they also take advances on the seafood, goes along with livestock, and use them balance, deforestation would never happen and their life could continue longer than that.

Advertising Purchase

1. How does advertising influence consumption?
Advertising is a form of communication intended to persuade an audience (viewers, readers, or listeners) to purchase or take some action upon products, ideals, or services. Simply advertisement is the Media that use to entertain, to convince people to buy the product that the ads represent for (coke, KFC…). It only shows us the positive side of the product, of course. Advertising usually goes along with the brand product, its positive effect, and especially attractive pictures or celebrity’s people. Mostly everybody wants their self to be great like models or famous good looking people, and they buy products from those brand. Finally, the result is the consumption of human increases by those advertisements.

2. Do you think citizens are sufficiently informed about the sustainability of our consumption habits? If not, how can we become more informed about sustainability issues?
I definitely don’t think citizens are sufficiently informed about the sustainability of our consumption habits. Why? I can tell that there are no more than 30% of human in this world live sustainably. So far, people consumption habits usually happen when they see the ad of that product, if they like that product, its fit with their money, they’ll buy it. To achieve more information about sustainability for the costumer, the government organization of the country or city should have the rallies for citizens, to achieve their knowledge about sustainability, or have advertising about sustainable development either online and billboards on the streets. There are actually many ways we can think of to spread out the sustainability consumption for citizens.

3.Do you think these advertising techniques influence what you and your friends purchase?
Of course yes. Like the info I said from above, advertising influences people’s consumption a lot, including me and my friends. Ads are always attractive people in many ways, at everywhere and anytime. We could spend billions of dollars for buying stuff that we like, just as if we have money to. Sometimes, advertising product techniques make people compare them self to the celebrities and models so badly that they have to use every way to get those product to comfort their self. In conclusion, I think advertising techniques do influence me and the entire human on the planet purchase.

Sustainability Examples

In 20-2-2007, The Australia Gov. announced that they will start to change, instead of using light bulbs; Australian people will turn to use neon to save the energy. According to the Australian Environment Minister, , Mr. Malcolm Tumbull, decrease the using of light bulbs helped decrease 4million tons of greenhouse gasses from now until year 2012, also degrease the electricity that used by the Australian people, about 66% less than, compare to the light bulbs.

This is an environ house at Australia. It’s made from nature organic materials such as clay, earth, timber, straw. It was robust, open plant, light and airy, so we doesn’t need to have the AC inside. Also, this house was designed with lots of big glass windows, made it very light in the morning, so light on doesn’t necessary for this house. The roof were made by panel, catch sunlight energy and it’s the main source of energy of this house, save lot’s of electricity and doesn’t release CO2 at all, especially unused with fossil fuel.

Migrated from North to South

Hi my name is Susan. I am 13 now, and my family was originally from the northern Vietnam. Back then when I wasn’t born, my parents, my brother and sister, decided to migrate to Ho Chi Minh City to have a better life with better education for my older brother and sister. My family migrated from Hai Phong city to Ho Chi Minh City in the 1990s. Since 1990s, my father was an engineer for an affiliate of a company at Hochiminh city. To take advance in transport for his job, it was also a good opportunity get a better English education (there were more foreign language schools and foreign speakers at HCM than Hai Phong) for my sister, our family moved. Those have explained why I was born at Hochiminh city instead of Hai Phong and speak the Southern Vietnamese accent.
For an internal migrant like me, it was easy to interact with people, because I didn’t get into much trouble of mixing up accents. The only bad thing of living here was that I didn’t really have a lot of relatives, except for my cousins. Even though I am a northern person, but I disliked several of the northern people eating custom, because I couldn’t really eat it. Positively was that Ho Chi Minh City was one of the richest city of Vietnam, and the education with international schools here were enormous. We (me and jenny) got advances of studying English, vice versa with my relatives at Hai Phong. My father always afraid of our traditional northern identities could lose, but I don’t think so. With me, Hai Phong is always in my mind, and I do really think that migrated to here, settled on Ho Chi Minh was a fantastic deal from my dad!
